How to reach Kanha National Park
The geographical location makes Kanha National Park quite convenient for visitors from all over the country. The park is spread across two districts, Mandla and Balaghat in the state of Madhya Pradesh and it is located amidst the beautiful Maikal Hills of the Satpura ranges.
Kanha’s topography is rugged and contains mixed and dense tropical moist deciduous forested vegetation with valuable grass meadows. The elevation varies from about 600 meters to 900 meters (about 2,000 to about 3,000 feet above sea level), with large plateaus locally called “dadars,” some as large as 12 square kilometers, supporting abundant grass as far as the eye can see.
There are two primary rivers, the Halon, which is perennial and Banjar, which is seasonal that flow through the park, nourishing the Narmada River system. The park is roughly in the shape of an 8 on its side; stretching from east to west, the park covers a distance of approximately 80 km, and it ranges in width from 8 to 35 km.
AIR, RAIL & ROAD
Choosing the mode to reach Kanha
By airways
By Air: The large airports are three in number that can get you most easily to Kanha. Nagpur airport being 266 km away offers good connectivity with major cities in India and Jabalpur airport being closest at a distance of 177 km has daily flights with all metros. The third most heavily used air route is Raipur in Chhattisgarh (250 km). Gondia Airport has only recently started receiving flights from Hyderdabad, so for South Indians it’s an ideal choice, being less than three hours away from Kanha by road.
By railways
By Rail: Train connectivity to Kanha is also good with several main stations. Jabalpur Junction, 165 km away, is the most preferred choice for tourists travelling from Delhi, Mumbai, Agra, Jaipur and western India having trains such as NZM JBP SF and MP Sampark Kranti for overnight journey. Gondia Railway Station, located at the distance of 145 km of Mukki gate, is easily accessible by the eastern India tourists and trains like Shaktipunj Express and Mumbai Mail connects Kolkata to Jabalpur. The West and South of India is linked to Nagpur Junction by numerous trains and Raipur station too is well connected with the eastern part of the country.
By roadways
By Road: Kanha National Park is well connected through roads to the major cities and has splendid highways linking these places. The park is 279 km from Nagpur by National Highway 44 and State Highway 11A and is 7 hours away from Nagpur by road. Jabalpur is 160-170 km away and is a beautiful drive through green vegetation. Transport facilities from Jabalpur, Nagpur, Bilaspur and Raipur are available, however none of them are regular and might take longer to reach; hence most of the tourists prefer their own vehicle for the convenience’s sake.
Reaching the correct safari gate
Entry Gates: Main gates of the park include Khatia Gate closer to Kanha zone and Mukki gate, 40 km apart. These are generally where you will find accommodation hubs and where you can get an idea for some of the zones you might like to check out on safari and the kind of distance you’ll be travelling overland to get anywhere from the cities. This in itself is an adventure, as the roads snake through the countryside, tribal villages and denser forests, cloaking you in the wild long before you get near the park gates.
